Pithoragarh district has opened its first dedicated astro-tourism observatory to promote science learning and responsible tourism. The project is started by the District Tourism Department, Pithoragarh, in partnership with Starscapes Experiences Pvt. Ltd. The observatory was inaugurated by Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj. The aim is to use Pithoragarh’s clear night skies to attract visitors while also creating jobs for local people.
The opening event was attended by district officials and local leaders. Starscapes has trained local youth as Astro Guides who will handle stargazing sessions and daily observatory work. These guides will help visitors understand the night sky in an easy way. This step connects tourism with skill training and gives local people a steady source of income.
The observatory will host astronomy classes, night-sky viewing, and learning programs for students, tourists, and residents. Leaders said this project will encourage interest in science and help Pithoragarh grow as a safe and eco-friendly travel destination. In the future, the state also plans to set up more such observatories in other suitable places.
