Stay Connected in the Air: KLM Rolls Out Free WiFi
KLM has officially started offering free WiFi on its European flights, marking an important step in improving passenger comfort. The service began on 22 January 2026 and is being introduced in stages across the airline’s short-haul network. With this move, KLM becomes one of the first airlines in Europe to provide free internet on short-distance flights. The airline aims to make flying more enjoyable and connected for all travelers. This change reflects the growing demand for internet access during air travel.
In the first phase of the rollout, free WiFi is available on around half of KLM’s European fleet. The airline plans to expand this service gradually over the coming years. Once fully implemented, free internet will be available on all Airbus A321neo aircraft, Embraer 195-E2 planes, and selected Boeing 737-800 aircraft. This phased approach allows KLM to ensure stable and reliable connectivity. The rollout also aligns with the airline’s long-term fleet upgrade plans.
KLM’s European aircraft do not have in-seat entertainment screens, which makes internet access even more valuable for passengers. With free WiFi, travelers can browse websites, send emails, stream videos, listen to music, or play online games. Passengers can also use their own devices to stay entertained throughout the flight. This added flexibility allows travelers to manage their time better while in the air. It also helps make short flights feel more productive and enjoyable.
To access the free WiFi, passengers need to log in or register as members of KLM’s Flying Blue loyalty program. Once logged in, they receive unlimited internet access for the entire flight. The process is simple and designed to be user-friendly. This system also helps KLM build stronger relationships with its customers. Unlimited access ensures passengers do not have to worry about data limits while flying.
Stephanie Putzeist, Head of Customer Experience at KLM, said that free internet has been one of the most requested services from passengers for many years. She explained that the initiative focuses on giving travelers more control over how they spend their time onboard. Since August 2025, KLM has added 12 new Airbus A321neo aircraft for European routes. These new planes feature modern seating and built-in WiFi, further improving comfort and overall travel experience.
