New Airport Near Machu Picchu Set to Boost Tourism in Peru

Travel to Machu Picchu may soon become much easier with the upcoming Chinchero International Airport near the Sacred Valley. Designed to offer a more direct route, the airport will allow travelers to bypass long connections via Lima and land closer to Peru’s most iconic attractions.

Expected to open by late 2027, the airport aims to boost tourism, create jobs, and spread travel benefits to rural communities beyond Cusco. Once operational, it could handle up to eight million passengers annually, potentially doubling visitor numbers to the region.

For tourists, this means easier access, shorter travel times, and more opportunities to explore the Andes and Inca heritage sites. However, concerns remain about overcrowding, environmental strain, and preservation of ancient culture. UNESCO has cautioned that unmanaged tourism growth could threaten Machu Picchu’s World Heritage status, making sustainable travel planning more important than ever.
